In the heart of the United States’ healthcare system, a 24-year-old dynamo from Nigeria, Adejoke Moronkola, has not only embraced the role of a nurse but has emerged as an epitome of excellence and inspiration. Graduating with distinction from East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in May 2022, Adejoke not only earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) but also garnered accolades such as the Best Student Award, Multicultural Diversity Scholar, and the privilege of being the class speaker.

Hailing from the suburbs of Lagos State, Nigeria, Adejoke’s journey reflects resilience and determination. Despite facing childhood challenges that hindered her dreams of playing musical instruments, she pursued academic excellence, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology from the University of Lagos in 2015. Undeterred by obstacles, she served as a Pharmacy Technician during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Sango Ota.

Adejoke’s pursuit of addressing global public health issues led her to a Master’s in Public Health, where she graduated among the top three in her cohort in 2020. In 2020, she embarked on a new adventure, enrolling in the Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program at ETSU. Overcoming formidable challenges, she not only conquered her academic journey but did so with flying colors, earning Summa Cum Laude honors, consistent spots on the Dean’s list, and juggling various leadership roles.

Beyond academic laurels, Adejoke sees nursing as a calling, where compassion, empathy, and dedication are the pillars of her journey. In a world grappling with a shortage of nurses, her role becomes even more critical, especially considering Nigeria’s dire nurse-to-population ratio.

Adejoke’s impact extends beyond nursing; she is a force for change, championing public health and social justice. Her commitment is visible through volunteering at health clinics, orchestrating health fairs, conducting educational sessions, and delving into research on crucial issues like maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS prevention, mental health awareness, and the ongoing COVID-19 response.
