Ntombizodwa Merriam Mahlangu’s Inspirational Journey from Domestic Worker to University Graduate

Meet Ntombizodwa Merriam Mahlangu, a resilient woman who defied adversity to achieve her dream of higher education. Hailing from Tonteldoos near Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, South Africa, Ntombizodwa faced formidable challenges, including poverty, a struggling education system, limited resources, and an unplanned pregnancy.

In 2004, her pursuit of education at Tshwane University of Technology was interrupted when she fell pregnant. Undeterred, Ntombizodwa turned to work as a domestic worker in Pretoria East to provide for her daughter. Despite her circumstances, she didn’t allow obstacles to hinder her quest for self-improvement. Teaching herself computer skills, mastering driving, and securing positions as a receptionist, personal assistant, and public relations officer showcased her determination.

In 2014, with the encouragement of her employer, Ntombizodwa enrolled at the University of South Africa (Unisa) and undertook part-time studies for four years. In 2018, she proudly graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in human and social studies, becoming one of the few domestic workers in South Africa with a university degree.

Remarkably, only 3.3% of domestic workers in South Africa had completed tertiary education by 2019, as per Statistics South Africa. The majority had secondary education (57.7%), while 22.5% had primary education or less.

But Ntombizodwa’s journey didn’t stop there. She authored and published her first book, “Brightness of Diamonds through Soil,” a novel narrating a domestic worker’s passion for education. Furthermore, she initiated the non-profit organization “Help One Helper,” dedicated to empowering domestic workers, gardeners, nannies, and handymen to unlock their full potential.

“Help One Helper” offers crucial information on university enrollment, career guidance, financial assistance, and mentorship. Ntombizodwa aims to inspire others not to give up on their dreams through her initiative.
