In the heart of Masaka, Uganda, Sharon Mbabazi, a tenacious 22-year-old woman, has emerged victorious over adversity, celebrating a remarkable achievement – earning her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Muteesa I Royal University. Sharon’s inspiring journey is a testament to her unyielding spirit, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to education, even while financing her studies as a bricklayer.
Sharon’s challenges began early, losing her mother at the tender age of 5. Faced with financial struggles, she found a unique solution—becoming a brickmaker and bricklayer to sustain herself and fund her education. Undeterred by societal mockery and challenges, she turned negativity into motivation, vowing to change her life and that of her family.
Reflecting on her journey, Sharon shared, “My village mates mocked me for being home because of school fees default; they used to call us poor because of our nearly falling house made out of soil.” Despite facing financial constraints that sometimes led to missing school due to transport costs, Sharon’s friends attest to her strong work ethic and determination.
Geoffrey Kisito, a childhood friend, reflects on their shared journey, saying, “She loves working; she knows that their family is poor, so she makes sure she finds jobs that will raise money.” Rosemary Nangawa, a course mate, emphasizes Sharon’s dedication to both her work and studies.

In 2018, Precious Chioma Ugwoke, from Enugu, Nigeria, made the courageous decision to re-enroll in high school. Undeterred by societal norms and the passage of time, she joined a junior class at St Andrew’s Secondary School, Ibagwa-Ani, Nsukka LGA. Despite facing challenges, she successfully concluded her high school education, culminating in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Senior Certificate Examination.
Ugwuoke Oloto Odobo, Precious’s supportive husband, celebrated his wife’s achievements on Facebook, highlighting her perseverance and determination. Precious resumed her academic pursuit in Junior Secondary School 3 (JS3) after the birth of their last child. Encouraged by overwhelming public support, she persevered until June 22, 2022, when she wrote her last paper – Government – in the WAEC Senior Certificate Examination.
