Dr. Joe Penhaul Smith, a distinguished alumnus of Newcastle University, has propelled his eco-conscious venture, Sustainable Sailing, to victory, securing the prestigious Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Start-Up of the Year Award for 2023.
A graduate with a BSc in Marine Biology and Oceanography from Newcastle in 2015, Joe Penhaul Smith founded Sustainable Sailing in 2021. The company leverages advancements in green chemistry, materials science, and biotechnology to spearhead a sustainable revolution within the marine industry.
Recalling his decision to choose Newcastle for Marine Biology and Oceanography, Joe expressed the warm and inviting atmosphere during his open day visit. His positive experience was bolstered by engaging with fellow prospective students and parents. His undergraduate journey was not only defined by academic excellence but also by active involvement in various clubs and societies. Serving roles in the Sailing Club, WetSoc (Marine Science and Technology Society), and the Fencing Club, Joe fostered enduring friendships.
Among the cherished memories of his student days was the WetSoc ball in 2015, held at the iconic Baltic, uniting the Marine Biology cohort in a memorable celebration.
Post-graduation, Joe pursued a Master’s and PhD at the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban, Scotland. His doctoral research centered on applying algal biology advancements to enhance aquaculture feed for the Scottish Mussel industry.
Transitioning to London as an algal biotechnology research scientist, Joe honed his expertise for over two years. His entrepreneurial journey began when he co-founded Sustainable Sailing with his younger brother, marking a return to his roots and the incorporation of concepts cultivated during his undergraduate studies at Newcastle.
In a momentous achievement, Sustainable Sailing secured the IET Start-Up of the Year Award in Glasgow in November 2023. The accolade acknowledged the development of the world’s first authentic sail recycling technology. Historically, sails, designed for resilience, posed a significant environmental challenge at their end of life. Approximately 1% of sails found a second life, while the rest contributed to 2,000 tonnes of annual waste through storage or landfill.
Sustainable Sailing’s groundbreaking solution utilizes recent breakthroughs in chemical and biological engineering, achieving a remarkable 90% recycling rate for all sail cloths on the market. The award ceremony in Glasgow, renowned for maritime innovation, resonated deeply with the company’s commitment to revolutionizing the sector.
Grateful for the recognition, Joe looks ahead to the future steps for Sustainable Sailing. The focus remains on driving sustainable practices within the marine industry and building upon the award-winning sail recycling technology.
