Meet Siphokazi Gatyeni-Dube, a trailblazing woman who defied the odds to become the first black woman and the first person to achieve a Doctorate degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in South Africa. Her inspiring journey from a rural village in the Eastern Cape to breaking academic barriers is a testament to her resilience and dedication.
Siphokazi’s journey began in a rural village, where she lost her father at a young age. Raised by her hardworking mother, who worked as a domestic worker, she faced numerous challenges. Despite the hardships, Siphokazi harbored a deep passion for mathematics from an early age.
Through determination and a bursary from the Department of Education, Siphokazi completed her high school education. She excelled at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, graduating with distinction in Mathematical Technology. Her academic journey continued at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) at Stellenbosch University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Mathematics with distinction.
Siphokazi worked for five years in the IT industry as a software developer and analyst, supporting her family financially. Despite the challenges, she persisted in pursuing her dream of becoming a mathematician.
With a full scholarship from the National Research Foundation (NRF), she earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics at Stellenbosch University, publishing two papers in international journals. Her dedication to research and academic excellence continued to flourish.
Siphokazi’s pursuit of knowledge led her to a Doctorate degree in Applied Mathematics at UJ, where she received another full scholarship. Under the mentorship of Professor Jan Harm van der Walt, she focused on developing efficient numerical methods for solving complex equations in fluid dynamics and heat transfer problems.
In July 2023, after four years of unwavering dedication, Siphokazi successfully defended her thesis, making history as the first person and the first black woman to achieve a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at UJ. Her groundbreaking research resulted in four published papers in reputable journals and presentations at international conferences.
Currently serving as an assistant lecturer at UJ, Siphokazi imparts her knowledge in mathematics and applied mathematics to undergraduate students. She is actively involved in mentoring and tutoring young girls, aiming to inspire the next generation of women in mathematics and science.
Siphokazi is not only a pioneer but a visionary. Her plans include continuing her research and teaching, starting a company to provide mathematical solutions to industries, and establishing a foundation to promote mathematics education and careers among black women in Africa.
