Renowned Biologist Maureen Donnelly Receives Prestigious Henry S. Fitch Award for Excellence in Herpetology

In a landmark moment for the field of amphibian studies, biologist Maureen Donnelly has been honored with the Henry S. Fitch Award for Excellence in Herpetology by the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (ASIH). This accolade marks the highest honor within the realm of amphibian and reptile biology and is a testament to Donnelly’s exceptional contributions to research, teaching, mentoring, and service over a career spanning more than five decades.

Nominated by her students, Donnelly’s receipt of the Henry S. Fitch Award recognizes her long-term excellence and significant impact on the study of tropical amphibians and reptiles, including frogs, salamanders, lizards, and snakes. Her extensive research has focused on the ecology, behavior, and conservation of these vital species, with particular emphasis on understanding the early development of tadpoles and addressing the alarming loss of amphibians and reptiles worldwide.

“My graduate students are the very best accomplishments in my career,” expressed an elated Donnelly. “All of them are glorious and make me proud each and every day.”

As a distinguished faculty member at the College of Arts, Sciences & Education, Donnelly’s commitment to her field has set her apart. Mike Heithaus, the executive dean of the College, emphasized, “Dr. Donnelly’s commitment to her field is what sets our faculty apart. Our students aren’t just learning from the best. They are being mentored by the best. The impact of her efforts and those of her students are having lasting impacts for amphibian and reptile conservation.”

Throughout her illustrious career, Donnelly has authored over 130 books and peer-reviewed research articles, showcasing her dedication to advancing scientific knowledge. Her contributions extend to being a 12-time contributor to Ichthyology & Herpetology, a prestigious quarterly peer-reviewed scientific journal. In 2016, she assumed the role of president at ASIH, further solidifying her leadership in the field. Donnelly now stands as the 25th person and one of only four women to be honored with the Henry S. Fitch Award.

“It is an honor to be one of the four women who have been recognized for their achievement and an honor to be with all the scientists who have been recognized since the award was established,” Donnelly remarked.

A distinguished academic, Donnelly earned her BA from California State University, Fullerton, and her Ph.D. from the University of Miami. Prior to joining Florida International University (FIU) in 1994, she held postdoctoral positions at the American Museum of Natural History and the University of Miami.
