Dr. Mary Amoako Honored Among Top 30 Women in Science by L’Oréal-UNESCO

Dr. (Mrs.) Mary Amoako, a distinguished researcher from the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, has been recognized by the Foundation L’Oréal-UNESCO as one of the thirty winners of the prestigious 14th L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science Young Talents Sub-Saharan Africa Awards.

These annual awards celebrate the excellence of scientific research conducted by African women scientists. The 14th edition, held in Kasane, Botswana, on November 9, 2023, honored twenty-five PhD candidates and five post-doctoral researchers for their outstanding contributions to science.

Dr. Mary Amoako holds a doctorate degree from Michigan State University, an MPhil in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from KNUST, and is a Registered Dietician certified by the Allied Health Professions Council. Her research focuses on enhancing health and nutrition outcomes among Ghanaians through nutrition and lifestyle interventions. Noteworthy studies include investigations into maternal mortality causes, antioxidant nutrition for burns patients, and aspects of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, stunting, and cognition deficits in infants, children, and adults.

As a founding member of the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND), Dr. (Mrs.) Amoako has actively contributed to the Advocacy Committee of GAND. Her current research delves into understanding the impact of diets and nutrition on the likelihood of babies developing orofacial clefts (OFC) facial malformations occurring early in pregnancy. Dr. Amoako is optimistic that the results of this study will inform interventions to reduce orofacial clefts in Ghana.

The L’Oréal Foundation, through its Women in Science program, aims to support and empower women across three major areas: scientific research, inclusive beauty, and climate action. Since 1998, the L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science program has recognized and empowered over 4,100 women researchers from 110 countries, fostering scientific excellence and inspiring the younger generation of women to pursue careers in science.
