Starting as a pepper vendor on the streets of Ibadan, Nigeria, she defied societal expectations to become the first black person to attain a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the prestigious University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Driven by her stellar academic record, Dr. Olubamiji moved to Finland to pursue a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, working part-time as a cleaner to support herself. Despite facing challenges, she persevered in her pursuit of academic excellence.
To achieve her aspirations, Dr. Olubamiji applied to over 100 Ph.D. programs, securing a full scholarship at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Despite facing financial challenges, she took on various part-time jobs, including makeup artist, teaching assistant, and hair braider, showcasing her unwavering work ethic.
During her Ph.D. program, Dr. Olubamiji conducted groundbreaking research on 3D-printed cartilage structures and their non-invasive evaluation using computed tomography. Her thesis established her as a leader in biomedical engineering, making her the first black individual to receive a Ph.D. in the field from the University of Saskatchewan in 2017.
