Daisha Griffin’s academic journey has been marked by resilience, determination, and a passion for scientific discovery. A biology student at the University of Michigan (U-M), Griffin’s path wasn’t traditional, but it’s a story of triumph over adversity, embodying the spirit of a true Michigan Wolverine.
Daisha Griffin’s journey took an unexpected turn when, at 18, she faced the loss of her stepfather, a moment that ignited her passion for biology. Motivated by this tragedy, Griffin, a curious spirit fascinated by cells and microscopes, decided to delve into the world of biology. However, life had other plans.
Responsibility fell on her shoulders after her stepfather’s passing, leading her to put her academic aspirations on hold to support her family. As COVID-19 emerged, Griffin became a frontline worker at a Detroit grocery store, experiencing firsthand the challenges and stresses of the pandemic.
Amidst these hardships, Griffin faced another heartbreak—her grandfather’s passing due to Lynch Syndrome-induced cancers. This personal loss became a driving force, inspiring her to delve into the complexities of Lynch Syndrome and cancer research.
During her break from formal education, Griffin immersed herself in understanding the genetic aspects of cancer within her family. Her research fuelled a newfound dream—to become a cancer researcher. Despite uncertainties about resources and feasibility, Griffin’s determination remained unwavering.
Her academic dreams received a significant boost when she was awarded the Futures for Frontliners scholarship at Henry Ford College in 2021. This opportunity paved the way for Griffin to pursue her goal of becoming a cancer researcher.
Daisha Griffin’s academic journey reached new heights when she decided to apply to the University of Michigan. Overcoming hesitations, she took a bold step, applying and subsequently joining U-M in the fall of 2023.
Reflecting on her decision, Griffin highlights the support provided by initiatives like the admission fee waiver and Go Blue Guarantee, which made her transition smoother. She acknowledges the common struggle of transfer students feeling behind, emphasizing the importance of boldness in pursuing one’s goals.
Griffin found solace and support through U-M’s Community College Summer Fellowship Program, where she connected with fellow community college students and engaged in research. Her project, focused on creating biofuels from algae for sustainable energy, further fuelled her passion for research and sustainability initiatives at U-M.
Griffin expresses gratitude for the sense of belonging and love she found at U-M, overcoming initial fears. As she forges ahead in her academic journey, Daisha Griffin’s story embodies the strength that arises from adversity, the power of research, and the importance of community support. Excited about the future, Griffin is poised to make a lasting impact in the fields of genetics and oncology, leaving an indelible mark on the U-M community.
