In a remarkable achievement for the second consecutive year, UT co-programme leader Willem Vos from the Faculty of Science and Technology (TNW) has secured a significant Perspectief programme, reaffirming his leadership in driving groundbreaking technological innovations. The new initiative, named AWAVE (Advanced Wave Engineering for Sustainable Optical Applications), is set to revolutionize high-tech devices through the development of flat optics, allowing for more efficient and sustainable technological solutions.
The AWAVE project focuses on advancing flat optical components to enhance the efficiency of various technological applications. These innovations aim to transform chip production lithography machines, lamps, and inkjet printers by utilizing fewer parts, reducing energy consumption, and enhancing performance. By replacing large and curved optical components with flat alternatives, the researchers aim to minimize light distortion, making the components easier to recycle and reducing the use of harmful substances. Additionally, these flat optics will emit a broader spectrum of colors simultaneously, resulting in sharper images and unlocking new applications.
The budget allocated for the AWAVE project, inclusive of co-funding, stands at an impressive 3.1 million euros, highlighting the substantial commitment to advancing flat optics technology.
Dr. Nandini Bhattacharya from Delft University of Technology joins Prof. Dr. Willem Vos as the program leaders of the AWAVE consortium. The collaborative effort involves knowledge institutes such as ARCNL, Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, and the University of Twente. Leading companies in the field, including AAC Hyperion, ASML, Canon, Demcon, JMO, SCIL, Signify, and Sumipro, are actively participating in the initiative, reflecting a comprehensive approach that blends academic excellence with industry expertise.
Perspectief is a pioneering program by the Dutch Research Council (NWO), funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. The program seeks to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations between researchers, industry partners, civil society organizations, and governments. By focusing on societal challenges and key technologies, Perspectief aims to drive technological innovations that have a profound impact on society and create economic opportunities for the Netherlands. The program aligns with the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy’s mission-driven top sectors and innovation policy.
Willem Vos’s continued success in securing major Perspectief programmes highlights his dedication to advancing technological frontiers and creating a lasting impact on society. The AWAVE project is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable optical applications, contributing to both environmental sustainability and economic growth in the Netherlands.
