Candida auris, a drug-resistant fungus, is rapidly spreading worldwide, posing an unprecedented threat to public health. First identified a mere decade ago, this resilient fungal species has evolved into a global menace, causing fatal infections, particularly in high-risk groups. Molecular biologist Auke de Jong is at the forefront of research aimed at unraveling the mysteries of Candida auris, with his findings set to be presented in his PhD thesis defense on December 22 at the Agnietenkapel in Amsterdam.

From superficial eczema to life-threatening bloodstream infections, fungal infections afflict over one billion people annually, resulting in 1.6 million deaths. According to De Jong, there has been a “dramatic increase over a period of ten years,” marking a shift from easily treatable Candida species to drug-resistant variants, with Candida auris emerging as a leading infectious fungi species.

The fungus’s origins remain enigmatic, but De Jong is investigating clues within its DNA and behavior. Speculating on a connection to seawater due to its high salt tolerance, De Jong suggests ocean currents could be a plausible means of global dispersion for Candida auris.

De Jong emphasizes the alarming characteristics of Candida auris, noting its exceptionally high death rate among vulnerable groups, coupled with resistance to conventional treatments. The fungus is robust, adaptable, and exhibits resilience to salt, high temperatures, and common disinfectants.

Almost all infections occur within hospital settings, primarily during surgical procedures, providing the fungus an opportunity to infiltrate the body. The origin of patient exposure remains unclear, suggesting carriers might have harbored the fungus before hospitalization.

Human actions, such as widespread fungicide use in agriculture, have accelerated Candida auris’s adaptive capabilities.
