The Faculty of Science at the University of Ottawa proudly announces the receipt of esteemed Royal Society of Canada (RSC) medals by Professors Abdelhamid Sayari and Ebrahim Karimi, recognizing their exceptional contributions to their respective fields.
Professor Abdelhamid Sayari, distinguished from the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences, has been awarded the 2023 Romanowski Medal for his groundbreaking work in developing porous materials for carbon capture. His innovation in creating recyclable adsorbents for CO2 recovery from industrial gases or directly from air has garnered international recognition. These materials, a key asset in carbon capture, are poised to revolutionize greenhouse gas mitigation and environmental preservation. His broader research spans wastewater treatment and innovative catalysts using captured CO2, earning him the 2022 Canadian Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Award for Green Chemistry.
Named after Miroslaw Romanowski, the Romanowski Medal recognizes exceptional contributions to environmental sciences, honoring Sayari’s outstanding dedication to environmental issues.
Professor Ebrahim Karimi, the Canada Research Chair in Structured Quantum Waves, received the RSC Rutherford Memorial Medal for his pioneering work in creating devices capable of generating structured photonic and electron waves. His research significantly impacts secure communications, quantum sensing, and quantum foundations. Karimi’s innovative contributions in generating structured light and electron beams showcase tremendous potential for revolutionizing secure communications and various industries.
