Sheila Brown’s journey in the media industry began serendipitously when she was offered a sales position at WUFO by the general manager, Jesse Key. Impressed by her personality at an American Red Cross event, Key recognized her potential and offered her the opportunity to join the WUFO team. Despite having a stable career at the Red Cross, Brown took a leap of faith, driven by her unwavering belief in God. This decision marked the beginning of a remarkable career that has spanned over three decades.
Starting as an entry-level saleswoman, Brown’s dedication and passion for the industry quickly propelled her to the role of sales manager at WUFO. Her ascent continued, culminating in her historic achievement as the first Black woman to own a radio station in Western New York. Brown had a vision for WUFO, Buffalo’s first Black-oriented radio station founded in 1962. She aimed to relocate it from a residential street to the bustling African American Heritage Corridor on Broadway in downtown Buffalo, significantly expanding its reach. Additionally, she successfully added an FM channel to the WUFO brand with Power 96.5, enhancing its industry footprint and introducing syndicated and morning shows.
