Are you a passionate and ambitious PhD student from a developing country, dreaming of conducting groundbreaking research in Belgium? Ghent University is proud to announce its fully funded Doctoral Scholarships for 2024, supported by the “Special Research Fund” (BOF).

Ghent University, a hub of academic excellence, is offering PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising candidates. This unique opportunity allows you to conduct half of your PhD research at Ghent University (‘North’) and the other half at a partner university in a developing country (‘South’). Ghent University will finance the research conducted in Ghent for 24 months, while the candidate must secure full-time funding for the remaining 24 months of research in the South.

– Candidates must hail from and possess the nationality of one of the selected developing countries (refer to the country list).
– Proposals should be jointly submitted by the candidate, a supervisor (promoter) at Ghent University, and a supervisor at the partner university in the South.
– No specific restrictions are imposed on the field of research, but preference will be given to topics relevant to development.
– Only degree students (aiming for a joint PhD degree at Ghent University) are eligible; exchange students are not applicable.
– This program is designed for students at the start of their PhD journey, with a preference for those who have not completed extensive preliminary research. At the fellowship commencement on 1/10/2024, a minimum of 36 months of doctoral research must be outstanding to complete the PhD.
– Ghent University is committed to encouraging female researchers. A Ghent University supervisor can support a maximum of 2 candidates per call, provided they are of different genders.

Successful candidates will enjoy the following benefits:

– PhD scholarship at Ghent University for a total of 24 months.
– The Ghent University promoter will receive a bench fee of €310 per month of research in Ghent.
– An additional €8,000 travel budget to cover operational costs, including part of the student’s travel expenses and both the Ghent University and local promoter’s costs.
